Plumbing Licensing in Orange City, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in plumbing work in Orange City must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as the installation, repair, and maintenance of pipes, fixtures, and appliances for the conveyance and use of water and waste in buildings and structures. Work that alters, installs, or repairs water supply lines, drainage systems, gas lines connected to appliances, or medical gas systems requires licensure. A person cannot legally perform plumbing work or represent themselves as a plumber without proper state licensure.

How to Get Licensed

Florida plumbing licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which operates under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To obtain a license:

  1. Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: You must have at least 4 years of documented plumbing experience (or equivalent apprenticeship) and pass the Florida plumbing examination.

  2. Apply through CILB: Submit your application directly to the state Construction Industry Licensing Board, not to Orange City. The board verifies your experience, conducts background checks, and schedules your exam.

  3. Pass the examination: The exam covers Florida plumbing code, safety standards, and trade knowledge.

  4. Obtain your license: Once approved, you receive a state-issued plumbing license valid for 2 years.

Medical gas installations require an additional certification under Fla. Stat. § 489.1136.
